Veterinary Science (VSCP) Project

Do you love learning about and caring for animals? Learn more about animals, animal welfare, and how to become a veterinarian through 4-H club activities. If you want to become a veterinary assistant, enroll in a preparatory training program to build the skills you need for a future career in veterinary medicine.

 

Start by earning your veterinary assistant certificate! To receive your veterinary assistant certificate through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Veterinary Medicine, you must complete 100 lessons and 225 hours of apprenticeship. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the industry-based certification exam for veterinary assistant certification now offered by TAMU Agrilife Extension Veterinary Science Certificate Program.

 

A few things you will learn and do in this project are: Animal nutrition, handling and restraining animals, helping with animal examinations and treatments, infectious diseases of animals, non-infectious diseases and assisting with surgery.

This project has an additional yearly fee of $75 for access to the online  portion of the training that the student will do at his/her own pace. Along with the online portion of this project, there are monthly meetings/lessons and occasional skill days.

 

When we started this program, we allowed kids in 5th -6th grade to join in for lessons. However, now our group has grown significantly and we really need the maturity that comes with the students being the appropriate age so we are only opening this up to kids 12+ in years.
